What were Pirates and their Ship Like?

Real Pirates

.

JT  Black Bart- Pirate Black Bart Roberts traveled the Atlantic Ocean when he was thirteen years old .He died from an ambush from the Royal navy off Cape Lopez on the Guinea Coast in 1722.

JT William Kidd-One of the most well-known pirates of all times was Captain Kidd.  He had originally been hired to rid the seas of pirates, but ended up becoming one.  Kidd was born around 1645. He found employment as an English Privateer and found s success in New York and the West Indies . He was called back to serve England .At the end of his pirating career he died in a cold blood murder.

JA JT  There really was a pirate named Blackbeard his  real name was Edward Teach  Blackbeard was one of the most feared pirates in the history of sea fering, his beard almost covered his entire face, and the site of Blackbeard would be enough to make his victims surrender immediatly. He would then take all their values such as weapons, navigation tools, and rum before his victims could sail off. Although his birth is unknown, some people believe he was born in Bristol around 1680. When Blackbeard was getting another crew together in North Carolina, the Governor thought that the pirates were planning a pirate haven was set up. Ships were set out to catch Blackbeard, at his hideout, and when they got there, war broke out. By the time the battle was over Blackbeard was killed by Maynard. Maynard had hung Blackbeard's head on his ship showing everybody Blackbeard was truely dead.

Long John Silver-  Was one of the most famous pirates of all time.

Jobs on A Pirate Ship

BB Captain-a captain would command by skill, daring, and the ability to win prizes and gold. To become captain of a ship the crew had to vote, and if he is disfavor he was threw overboard, or maroon off the ship.

Quarter Master- he was almost as equal to the captain of the ship. His general rule was that during times of battle the captain had unlimited authority, but at all times the captain and the rest of the crew had to listen to what he says. He had to respect the crew’s interest and because of this he got a little extra cut of the gold.

Sailing Master-his job was to navigate ship and the sailing of the ship. His job was difficult because the maps were incorrect most of the time, and he was in charge of the maps. Many of the Sailing Master were forced to into pirate services from captured ships.

Boatswain- he was in charge of watching over the ships supply stores. He also had to inspect the ship, its sails, and rigging every morning and reporting it all to the captain. He also had to watch all the decks activities, and he had to drop the anchor.

Carpenter and Surgeon- the carpenter had to check and repair the wooden hull of the ship. He fixed the hull by butting oakum between the cracks of the wood to seem the planks close together. He is also a surgeon that performed operations on the wood tools.

Master Gunner- he was in charge of the guns and the gun powder. He also had to keep the guns in good shape for fighting. If he didn’t keep them in good shape they could become rusty and then they wouldn’t work as good.

ED First Mate-

The first mate on a ship is the man that the captain picks for his second in command. Even if the pirate is killed the job falls to the quartermaster. Ships also had/have second, third, even forth mates made a chain of command.

ED A.B.S.-

Is the person that sails or (drives) the boat and navigates the crews way to there Destination. He also has to find out and know the weather, so he knows if there are harsh storms coming in.

ED Cabin Boy-

The cabin boy is normally a young boy of special birth who is sent to sea to learn the maritime trade. Most of the time the cabin boy waits on the officers and or pirates of the ship. The cabin boy will run messages and errands for the officers, get their uniforms ready, maybe even get their dinners. Also the cabin boy works long hard working hours.

EDPowder Monkey-

Was a British naval term used to describe the young boys who made up the gun crews. Many of the powder monkeys were probably made into service, being kidnapped by press gangs and forced to serve on the ships. Often the powder monkeys were young boys no more than eleven-thirteen years of age. They mainly helped out the gun crews and learned most of the ships basics but were paid little to nothing and were treated very badly.

EDSwab or Swabie-

A person that cleans the ship, it is also the term for someone who is not a very smart person or (dumb).
