♠Vocabulary♠

 

 

 Some words in the book are hard to understand so we have written definitions for each one.This will help you understand the story.

 

 Apoplexy- A stroke.

Hamlet-  A small village.

 

Lugger- A small boat used for sailing and fishing.

 

 Tinder box- .A box holding tinder, usually fitted with a flint and steel.

Quadrant- Head of a ship's rudder, to which the steering mechanisn is attached.

Brace of Pistols- A pair of pistols. (guns)

Skulk- A british manliger to shirk duty.

 

Revenue officer- A reasponible person for all revenue-generating functions, and short for cheif revenue officer.

 

Cutter- A sailing vessel with a single mast.

 Blackbeard-  An old English pirate who sailed in the Caribbean and off the Atlantic coast off of North America.

Seal- To affix a seal to in authorization,testimony.

 

 

Bearings-The manner in which one conducts or carries oneself, including posture and gestures.

 

 Diabolical-Having the qualities of a devil, devilish, fiendish, outrageously wicked.

 

  Sea-dog-An experienced sailor.

 

  Assizes-A trial session, civil or criminal, held periodically in specific locations in

England, usually by a judge of a superior court.

 

  Magistrate-Civil officer charged with the administration of the law.    

 

 

 Hoarfrost-A covering of minute ice needles, formed from the atmosphere at night upon the ground and exposed objects when they have cooled by radiation below the dew point, and when the dew point is below the freezing point.

 

 

  Cutlass-A short, heavy, curved sword with a single cutting edge, formerly used by sailors.

 

 

 Bleeding-The act or process of drawing blood from a person, surgically.

 

 

  Buccaneer-Any of the piratical adventurers who raided Spanish colonies and ships along the American coast in the second half of the 17th century.
